Sarara is unique in many ways, but what makes it truly exceptional is something which goes far beyond the fine experience it offers guests. It is the only real example of a successful tourism initiative that is 100% owned by the community that it serves. The community are totally involved in the day to day running of the lodge and welcome guests wholeheartedly into their lives. The result of the conservation efforts by leading experts in partner-ship with the local Samburu, have seen massive returns for both the people and the wildlife of this area. This is perhaps made more significant due to the fact that the lodge is built on the site of an elephant massacre in 1989 and it is an achievement that the community is rightly proud of.
